The Colorado River Walkers will be hosting a walk on the southeast side of Austin this coming Saturday, November 22nd. The walk start point is the Center for Environmental Research at Hornsby Bend, 2210 South FM 973, Austin, TX 78725.
We had heard that the migratory birds would be visiting the ponds this time of year, and the photo above shows a recent gathering.
Also, with the recent rains, the walking trails are also coming back to life after a very dry summer. Below is a shot of the River Trail taken earlier this week.

The walk start window is between 8:00 am and 11:00 am, and walkers must finish by 2:00 pm. There is a 10k route and a 5k route available, both rated 1B, on asphalt and dirt roads and dirt walking trails. The trails are uneven in spots, so a walking stick may be helpful.
The next two pictures were taken on the 10k route. First are the cactus fields.

Next is a view of the Colorado River.

In addition to enjoying wildlife and the peaceful walking trails by the Colorado River, you’ll learn about the important work being done by the Center for Environmental Research and the valuable recycling being done onsite at the Biosolids Management Plant. Please note that all visitors must present an ID at the main gate to enter the site, for example, a driver’s license.
