We are featuring a revamped version of our Capital YRE walk this coming Saturday, July 12th. Carol Obianwu, our trail master, has changed the walk route for this one-time event to include the 18-feet-high troll sculpture in Pease Park, shown above. It is named “Malin’s Fountain” and was created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo.
To accommodate the extra distance into Pease Park and back, we changed the walk Start/Finish location to the parking lot of House Park, 1301 Shoal Creek Blvd, Austin, TX 78701.
Club members will be in the parking lot from 7:00 am to 9:00 am to register walkers, collect the $4.00 fee, stamp books, and hand out maps and directions.
Please note that there are No Restrooms at the Start Point; however, there are restrooms in Pease Park, about 1 km into the walk.
Walkers may choose any of three different walk distances: 2, 6, or 10 km.
If you can only walk a short distance, the 2k route is simply to Pease Park to see the troll and back. You will also see the Treehouse in Pease Park on the 2k route. It is a huge round metal sphere containing a rope net for jumping or tumbling that is about 2 stories high. It is pictured below.

After seeing Pease Park, the 2k route returns to the Start/Finish, but the 6 and 10k routes continue onto the Shoal Creek Greenbelt Trail. Walkers exit the trail at the Butterfly Bridge at 2nd Street, shown below with one of the giant owl statues.

They then head up Congress Avenue to the State Capitol, where the 6k and 10k routes split.
The 6k walkers turn left to pass by the Texas African American History Memorial on the Capitol grounds, below, before returning to the Start/Finish.

The 10k walkers turn right at the Capitol and pass by the Tejano Monument on the grounds. That monument is below.

After circling the Capitol and walking up the beautiful new mall, the 10k walkers enter the UT Campus. They view the UT Turtle Pond, shown below.

They also pass by a statue of Barbara Jordan, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas in the 1970s. Her statue is below.

So, those are some of the highlights! We hope that you can join us and see them for yourself!
