The Colorado River Walkers will be hosting a volksmarch in Austin on Saturday, February 20, 2021.
The walk features two hike and bike trails on the west side of downtown Austin: The Johnson Creek Trail and the Ann and Roy Butler Trail. It also incorporates the historic American Legion Post 76 and Deep Eddy Pool.
For all the details on this great walk, download the flyer:
The walk Start/Finish is at the Austin High Tennis Center, 1717 West Cesar Chavez Street in Austin. It is on the north side of the Colorado River, close to where Loop 1 (Mopac) crosses the river. Walkers may start the walk between 8:00 am and 11:00 am and must finish by 2:00 pm.
The walking route consists of 2 loops, each approximately 5k in length. The first loop follows Johnson Creek Trail north under Loop 1 to Enfield Rd. (15th St). It returns through a residential neighborhood, past Deep Eddy Pool and the Veterans Memorial. The second loop is on the Butler trail and circles part of the Colorado River/Lady Bird Lake on the west side of Austin.
This event qualifies for the following AVA Special Program: Walking with America’s Veterans.
A group of Colorado River Walkers walked this route in October of 2020, and Carol and Doug sent these pictures:

The text of “The Johnson Home” historical marker above is:
Erected 1858 by Chas. Johnson, near the Wm. McGill Ford on the Colorado River. Built by fellow Swedes, of native stone from his own quarry and lime kiln.
Walls are 18 inches thick. A stone-paved breezeway joined the two wings of the building.
A long porch with six Ionic columns was added, and the open breezeway closed following the purchase of the property in 1924 as permanent home of the Travis Post 76, American Legion.
