The next Texas Volkssport Association meeting will be in Georgetown, over the 3-day weekend of November 13th through the 15th. Our Austin Volkssport club, the Colorado River Walkers, will be hosting the event along with the Texas Volkssport Association. The picture above shows the small Berry Family Cemetery on the grounds of the Berry Springs Park and Preserve.
We are pleased to be offering three walks, one on each of the 3 days:
Friday, November 13 – Historical Round Rock YRE
The walk start point is the Allen R. Baca Center, 301 W Bagdad, Bldg 2, Round Rock Tx, 78664.
- Start Point will be staffed from Noon to 3:00 PM, but walkers may start any time the Baca Center is open, which is typically 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Fridays.
- There are 10k and 5k routes available, both rated 1A. Walkers get to experience historic downtown Round Rock, as well as some beautiful hiking trails along Brushy Creek. Highlights are the actual “Round Rock” in the middle of the creek, the impressive sculptures in Chisholm Trail Crossing Park commemorating cattle drives of the old west (shown below), and of course, Round Rock Donuts!

Saturday, November 14 – Historic Georgetown YRE
The walk start point is the Best Western Plus Georgetown Inn and Suites, 600 San Gabriel Village Blvd, Georgetown, TX 78626. This is also our host hotel for the weekend.

- There are 10k and 5k routes available, both rated 1A. After leaving the hotel, the walk route passes through Blue Hole Park, a favorite local swimming hangout, shown below. The route continues along the San Gabriel River and passes by historic Chautauqua Park before continuing on the South San Gabriel River Trail. Walkers also go through downtown Georgetown and pass by the historic Williamson County Courthouse. The 10k route goes into the Southwestern University campus before returning through the downtown area.

Sunday, November 15 – Berry Springs Park and Preserve Traditional Walk
The walk start point is the Tonkawa Pavilion at Berry Springs Park & Preserve, 1801 County Rd 152, Georgetown, TX 78626.
- The start window for the walk is from 9:00 AM to Noon, and walkers must finish by 2:00 PM.
- There are 10k and 5k routes available, both rated 1B. Walkers hike through various natural areas in Berry Springs Park and Preserve and through the historic grounds of the Berry homestead. Pioneer John Berry settled the land in 1846 and established a farm there near Berry Creek. He built a spring-driven gristmill, a blacksmith shop, and a gun shop. Walkers see some remnants of the homestead, including one of the burr stones from John Berry’s mill and the small Berry family cemetery. The peaceful walk route goes through a century-old heritage pecan grove (shown below) and shaded areas with large oak trees. It also goes along Berry Creek, past the spring-fed fishing pond, and by the wildflower meadow. The 10k route also includes the Susan Blackledge Nature Trail, which was completed in 2021.
