The San Antonio Pathfinders walking club is hosting the “Hondo Heritage Hike: H3” on Saturday, September 5, 2026. This same walk was originally scheduled for May 23 of this year. The weather did not cooperate on that day, so they are hosting this walk again. There is no fee for this walk for any walkers who registered for the May 23rd walk. If you were one of those, then please come and walk after registering.
The Start/Finish will be at the Medina County Museum, 2202 18th Street, Hondo, TX 78861. Walkers may start between 7:30 and 10:30 AM, and they must finish by 1:00 PM.
This is an easy, flat walk on paved surfaces through the historic town of Hondo, TX. The Medina County Museum is located in the original railroad depot building. The first rail line reached the Hondo area in 1881, and the town of Hondo was formed when building lots were sold by the railroad.
Walkers have the option of a 5k or 10k route. The 5k walk passes through the old downtown, the restored Raye Theater, the Medina County Courthouse and Old Jail and many other historical sites. The 10k hike passes through what was once the world’s largest air navigation school. The U.S. Army built the Hondo Army Air Field in 1942. Over 14,000 navigators were trained to serve in World War 11 before it closed in 1946.
Point of contact for the walk is Susan Noonan. You can contact her via the AVA website entry for this walk.
Also, thanks to Arnie Dollase from Castroville, Tx for providing the a copy of the advertisement from the Anvil newspaper for this event. It is shown above.
