We will be featuring a new version of our Lady Bird Lake Year Round Event (YRE) on Saturday, June 27th. We will start on the east end of the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike trail so we can include the new Wishbone Bridge and the Unity Tunnel.
The Wishbone Bridge goes out over the water and provides great views of the lake and Longhorn Dam. A picture of the bridge is below showing the dam on the right.

The Unity Tunnel provides a passthrough under Pleasant Valley Road and is beautifully decorated with mosaics and murals. The mosaic with the owl above is from the tunnel, as well as the picture below.

The walk start point is the Rodolfo “Rudy” Mendez Recreation Center, 2407 Canterbury St, Austin, TX 78702. Restrooms are available a short distance from the Start/Finish.
There is a 5k route and a 10k route. Both include the Wishbone Bridge, the Unity Tunnel, and part of the Hike and Bike trail. The 5k walkers return to the start point through the local neighborhood, while the 10k walkers stay on the Hike and Bike trail and walk on part of the Boardwalk on the south side of Lady Bird Lake.
Since we are already feeling the summer heat, we will have an early start window. After all, it isn’t called a “Summer Sunrise” walk for nothing! So registration and pre-stamping of books is anytime between 7:30-10:30 a.m.
You can get out there early and enjoy the beauty of the trail along the water. A few shots are below.

We also came across this pretty pocket park with a fishing pier and this beautiful old tree.

More to come later, but for all the details, please see the walk brochure below.
