Gonzales Area Walks Nov 7 to 9

The Texas Volkssport Association and the San Antonio Pathfinders are hosting three days of walking this coming weekend.  The three walks are:

Friday, November 7, 2025

  • A walk in Shiner, Texas, starting at the Shiner Brewery Lawn Area (Look for signs).  This is one of our great YREs, with the start/finish at the K. Spoetzl Brewery, located at 603 E Brewery St., Shiner, Tx. 77984.  Walks are 10k/5k Rated 1A; Start 1:00pm to 3:00pm, Finish 5:00pm.
  • Shiner is home to historic buildings and churches, as well as the Spoetzl Brewery, the oldest independent brewery in Texas.  After you finish the walk, you can purchase a tour of the brewery or some BBQ, listen to local bands, and visit the tasting room until 8pm.

  • We’ll be walking in the historic town of Gonzales, with museums and grand old homes.  The start/finish is at the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce/Visitor Center, located at 304 Saint Louis St, Gonzales, Tx. 78629.  Walks are 11k/5k Rated 1A; Start 8:00am to 10:30am; Finish 12:30pm.
  • Also, we are pleased to announce that on Saturday morning, Charley Watt, Jr. will be leading a group 5k walk starting at 9:00am.  He will make brief stops at historical sites along the way and give a short summary of each site, let walkers take pictures, and then proceed with the walk.  When the group reaches the 1885 JB Wells Mansion, pictured above, our group will be given a 25-minute private tour of this beautiful and historic home.  It contains 15 rooms with original furnishings from 1885.  The fee for the guided tour is $5.00 per person to enter.  Walkers who don’t wish to tour the mansion may wait outside or continue walking.

  • This is a scenic walk in Palmetto State Park, located at 78 Park Road 11 South, Ottine, Tx. 78629.  (There is a $3.00 fee to enter the State Park.)  The start/finish is at the Public/Day Use Area (Follow Signs to Start).  Walks are 10k/5k Rated 1B; Start 8:00am to 10:30am.
  • The walk is made of two 5K loops, one mainly on trails and among the Palmettos; the other on trails and roads through the park.  The park features bogs and dense vegetation, giving the park a jungle-like atmosphere.

In addition to the walks, the Texas Volkssport Association (TVA) will hold a member meeting Saturday afternoon at the host hotel meeting room from 1:30pm – 5:00pm. All AVA walkers are invited to attend.

The host hotel for this 3-day event is the Sleep Inn and Suites by Choice Hotels in Gonzales. Twenty-five rooms have been blocked at a special rate. Call 830-672-1888 and tell them you want the Texas Volkssport rate. Reservations must be made by two weeks before the event.
