Save the Date!  Bastrop State Park Walk on Sat, Nov 16th

Save the Date!  Bastrop State Park Walk on Sat, Nov 16th

The Colorado River Walkers are pleased to be hosting a walk in Bastrop State Park this fall.  It will be on Saturday, November 16th, with a start window from 8:00 to 11:00 am.

Our Start/Finish will be at the Roadhouse Bastrop restaurant, 0.25 km from the entrance to Bastrop State Park.  Participants will walk from the restaurant into the park, and this distance counts towards the total distance walked.  The address for Roadhouse Bastrop is 2804 Tx Hwy 21, Bastrop, TX 78602.

NOTE: We added another option for walkers after our flyers were printed. With this option, walkers will drive into the park, instead of walking across Hwy 21. This alternate route starts and ends at the checkpoint in the park and includes extra distance to make up for not walking from the restaurant into the park. Walkers will still register, pay, and receive their start card at Roadhouse Bastrop. They will then drive into Bastrop State Park and do the entire walk within the park. They then need to drive back to Roadhouse Bastrop to the Finish table.

There will be both a 5 km and 10 km route available.  Almost all of the 5 km route is on wide cement hike and bike trails and park roads.  It is rated 1A.  The photo above was taken on “The Ol’ 9 Loop” trail, which is on both the 5 and 10 km routes.

The picture below shows Lake Mina, also on both routes.  The hike and bike paths that we are using were formerly golf cart paths in an area that used to be a golf course.

Our club used to host walks in Bastrop State Park on a regular basis, but we haven’t hosted a walk there since the devastating wildfires in 2011.  The Loblolly Pines are currently in various stages of regrowth.  The picture below was taken on the Pine Warbler Trail, which is on the 10 km route.  You can see the younger pines with some older trees behind them.

The last picture was also taken on the 10 km route, which is rated 2B due to some steeper inclines and natural walking surfaces.  It was taken on the Piney Hill Spur trail.

We’re enjoying exploring the trails in Bastrop State Park as we prepare for the walk.  Please join us on Nov. 16th and see all the work that has gone into restoring the pines!
