October Meeting Minutes

The October 2024 meeting of the Colorado River Walkers was called to order at 6:05 pm on October 14, 2024, at the Central Market Cafe. Attendance: Mike F, Kathy F, Carol O., Mary Z., Stephanie K, Linda D., Greg S., Terry S.  The September minutes were accepted as written.  The total club financial assets as of September 30 were $1738.99, with $1683.99 in the checking account.  We had three YRE registrations in September, two at the Historic Capital Walk and one at Round Rock.

Next month the country will leave Daylight Saving Time so our usual meeting time will be after dark.  It was decided to have the next meeting on Sunday, November 3, at 3 pm at Central Market Cafe.

Memorial Park in Round Rock is now open, and so Carol is planning a new YRE route for 2025 to again visit the original “Round Rock.”  The Pflugerville YRE will be modified in 2025 to remove the labyrinth special program and to add a one-block route change to pass a garden nursery with yard gnomes for sale.  The gnomes will quality for the new special program in 2025 called “Where the Wild Things Are.”  In 2025 there is a new special program for grain elevators.

Our next traditional walk will be at Bastrop State Park on November 16.  Stephanie received feedback from seven workers at the workers’ walk on October 12.  The Roadhouse restaurant has given us permission to use their covered porch for registration.  The first 5K requires crossing Hwy21 at a traffic light and then goes through the former Bastrop State Park golf course.  Stephanie passed out the workers’ sign-up sheet.

Stephanie distributed draft maps for the 5K and 10K walks at Bastrop SP and the draft flyer.  She requested feedback about them from the members. Because of wildfire and floods, Bastrop SP was closed for a long time. The first 5K, rated 1A, uses paved trails that were previously the golf course; this land is now reverting to grassland savannah and walking trails, with a small lake.  The second 5K goes through the camping areas and CCC structures that many remember and is rated 2B because of inclines and natural trails.

Announcements: Carol urged everyone to attend the Saturday, October 19, walk in Gonzales.  Linda said it was one of the most interesting places in Texas.  The trail master, Charles Watt, has been a strong supporter of our club.  The TVA meeting is November 9-10 in Rockport.  Terry will be our voting delegate.  There is a group walk of the Lost Maples State Park YRE on Tuesday, November 12.

Terry has volunteered to host an #OptOutside event the day after Thanksgiving (Friday, November 29) at the Pflugerville YRE site.

AVA is compiling a necrology of walkers who have died in the past year, if you know of someone from our club who has died, please let Carol know.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:07 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Terry Sullivan
