Meeting Minutes September 2024

The above photo of Kathy and Mike F. was taken by Carol Obianwu at a recent workers walk for our “Richard Moya Park Revisited” walk which will take place on September 28th. They are standing by a memorial to Marines who died in the Iraqi war. The memorial is located on the grounds of the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Austin.

September Meeting Minutes

The September 2024 meeting of the Colorado River Walkers was called to order at 6:05 pm on  September 9, 2024, at the Central Market Cafe. There were 9 members in attendance: Larry J., Mike F, Kathy F, Carol O., Mary Z., Stephanie K, Linda D., Greg S., Terry S.

The August minutes were accepted as written.  The total club financial assets as of August 31 were $2268.92, with $2213.92 in the checking account.  Announcements followed.

Stephanie and Carol updated the YRE listings for 2025 and tried to get as many special programs included for each YRE as possible.  The Pflugerville walk will no longer have a labyrinth. The club sent a condolence card to Priscilla Johnson on the death of her husband Heinz, a long-time walker.

There is a traditional walk in Medina on September 14.  Carol encouraged members who could not get to Medina to come to a workers’ walk for the Richard Moya Park traditional event (see more on our upcoming event below). November 16 will be our club’s traditional walk at Bastrop State Park.

September 25 is the next AVA Board meeting, available by Zoom.  There is also a monthly webinar, open to all but requiring registration to get the Zoom link. The TVA fall meeting will be on the Texas coast November 9 and 10.  This is veterans’ day weekend. Carol cannot attend and we would like a club member to cast our vote.

The Big Give begins this month.  This is a fund-raising opportunity for AVA, beginning September 11 and ending October 31.  Individuals and clubs are encouraged to give.  Mary moved that the club give $250 to the Big Give.  Motion passed unanimously.  Terry will send a check.

Grouper is a health-related enterprise that encourages people to walk. Grouper will pay their fees to AVA, and AVA gives the club a credit.  Contact information can be found by going into the AVA website.  We have had two Grouper walkers so far.

The Richard Moya Park traditional walk will be September 28.  There will be a checkpoint for the 10K at the Million Air FBO near the south terminal of the airport.  There is also a veterans’ memorial on the 10K.  Stephanie laid out the earlier route at Moya Park.  Carol is now working on the route and distributed a map of the tentative route.  The club members went over the map together.  The workers walk is tentatively on September 14. The first draft of a workers’ sign-up sheet was circulated for members to sign up.

Carol encouraged everyone to distribute flyers for the Moya walk to potentially interested walkers.  She is going to the Lifetime Learners walking group next Monday to see if they have interest.  She suggests that we approach new walkers at the end of the walk to describe new walker packets.  Greg has advertised the walk to the Austin Chronicle and to the local AARP group.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:16.

Respectfully submitted,

Terry Sullivan
